Scalable Knowledge Management to Meet Global 21st Century Challenges in Agriculture

Achieving global food security requires better use of natural, genetic, and importantly, human resources—knowledge. Technology must be created, existing new technology knowledge deployed, adopted by farmers others engaged in agriculture. This collaboration amongst many professional communities world-wide including farmers, agribusinesses, policymakers, multi-disciplinary scientific groups. Each community having its own knowledge-associated terminology, techniques, types data, collectively forms a barrier to collaboration. Knowledge management (KM) approaches are being implemented capture from all make it interoperable accessible as “group memory” create multi-professional, multidisciplinary economy. As an example, we present KM efforts at the US Department Agriculture. Information Communications (ICT) is developed tacit explicit assets Big Data transform into curated products available, with permissions, agricultural community. Communities Practice (CoP) scientists, USDA elsewhere foster exchange. Marrying CoPs ICT-leveraged aspects will speed development adoption needed solutions. Ultimately network networks so that stored anywhere can used globally real time.
